Garage door repairs are what we do most. Most of the repair calls we see across Adelaide fall into a small set of patterns: snapped torsion springs, dead motors, off-track doors, broken cables, panel damage from a reversing vehicle, and remote or keypad faults. Most are single-visit fixes by a technician with the right parts on the van, and every job starts with a fixed-price quote so you know the cost before any work begins.
We repair every common door type in Adelaide: roller doors, sectional or panel-lift doors, tilt doors, and the openers that drive them.
Common Adelaide repair calls
Snapped torsion spring
The unmistakable loud bang at 6am when the door is opening, followed by the door not lifting. Torsion springs (the wound coil sitting horizontally above the door) store enormous energy. When they fail, the door becomes essentially un-liftable by the motor. Fix: spring replacement, typically $220-$320 for a single spring, $360-$480 for a pair (recommended if both are aged similarly).
Motor humming, door not moving
Capacitor failure, drive-gear stripping, or a logic-board fault on the opener. Common across B&D, Centurion, Merlin, Steel-Line and Chamberlain motors after years of daily use. Fix: motor and opener repair $160-$480 depending on which component has failed; full opener replacement $480-$780. The technician diagnoses on the call-out before recommending repair or replacement.
Door off the tracks
Almost always a hit by a vehicle reversing out, or a broken cable that’s let one side drop. Don’t operate it. Running the motor on a misaligned door tears panels, bends tracks, and turns a $260-$540 repair into a new door from $1,400 upwards. Fix: track realignment $260-$420, or $360-$540 with cable replacement. Our guide on what to do when a door comes off its tracks walks through the safe steps.
Remote or keypad not working
Dead battery (the most common cause), lost code, weak signal, or a logic-board fault on the opener side. Fix: remote and keypad programming; reprogramming and a battery swap is often $80-$140 if no parts are needed, and remote replacement $40-$140.
Buckled or rusted panel
Single-panel replacement is usually cheaper than a full door swap. Fix: panel replacement $480-$1,200 depending on panel size, finish, and door brand. Photos help us quote accurately.
Cable snapped
The cables that run vertically inside the tracks lift the door under spring tension. They snap when frayed; left unrepaired they cause off-track damage. Fix: cable replacement $180-$340 a pair.
Panel-lift garage door repairs
Panel-lift (sectional) doors are now the standard on newer Adelaide homes, from the northern growth suburbs to infill builds in the south. They lift in hinged horizontal panels on rollers that run up curved tracks into the ceiling. That design seals well and looks clean, but it has more moving parts than a roller door, so the faults are different:
- Worn or seized rollers make the door shudder, grind or stop part-way.
- Cracked hinges between panels, often after a vehicle bump, let the panels sag out of line.
- Frayed lift cables at the bottom corners are the warning sign before a cable snaps and the door drops on one side.
- Out-of-balance springs force the opener to work harder, which shortens its life.
Most panel-lift repairs are done in one visit. We re-set the door balance and the opener’s force and limit settings afterwards, so the door runs smoothly and the safety reverse works.
Garage door track repair and replacement
Bent or loose tracks are the usual cause of a door that binds, jumps or comes off its rollers. A track that has only been knocked out of line can be straightened and re-fixed as part of a realignment ($260-$420). A track that is kinked, cracked or badly corroded, which is common near the coast in Glenelg, Henley Beach and Aldinga, needs a replacement section. We check the matching track on the other side at the same time, because both sides need to run parallel for the door to travel cleanly.
Repair or replace?
| Situation | Usually the better value |
|---|---|
| One snapped spring or cable on a sound door | Repair |
| Motor fault on an opener with parts still available | Repair |
| One dented panel on a current-model sectional | Replace the panel |
| Rust through several panels or the bottom rail | Replace the door |
| Discontinued door with no spare parts | Replace the door |
| Repeated faults and an old opener | Get both priced and compare |
Our guide on when to repair or replace a garage door goes through the decision in more detail, and our garage door repair cost guide lists every common repair price in one place.
What to do while you wait
- Don’t force the door. If it won’t open, don’t crowbar it. Don’t run the motor repeatedly.
- Disengage the motor if you can. Most openers have a manual-release pull cord that disengages the motor from the door, letting you lift the door manually if the springs are healthy.
- Get the car out if it’s trapped, but only if the door’s fully open and stable. If it’s mid-travel, leave it.
- Photograph the failure point if visible. Spring break, panel damage, off-track condition: photos help the technician arrive with the right parts.
If a car is trapped or the door is stuck open overnight, see our emergency garage door repair page.

Frequently asked questions
How much do garage door repairs cost in Adelaide?
It depends on the fault. As a guide, a single torsion spring is $220 to $320 and a pair $360 to $480, motor and opener repairs $160 to $480, track realignment $260 to $420 ($360 to $540 with new cables), cables $180 to $340 a pair and a sectional panel $480 to $1,200. The call-out fee is $90 to $140, waived if the work proceeds.
Do you repair panel-lift (sectional) garage doors?
Yes. Panel-lift doors are the most common door on newer Adelaide homes, and we repair their springs, cables, rollers, hinges, tracks, panels and openers. Because they have more moving parts than a roller door, a yearly service helps catch worn rollers and frayed cables before they cause an off-track door.
Can I fix my garage door myself?
Some jobs, yes: replacing a remote battery, cleaning the tracks, wiping the bottom seal, re-aligning the safety beams and lubricating rollers and hinges with a garage-door silicone spray. Leave torsion springs, cables and off-track doors to a technician. They are under high tension and can cause serious injury if they let go.
Is it worth repairing an old garage door?
Usually, if the door itself is sound. A spring, cable, motor part or single panel costs a fraction of a new door. Replacement starts to make sense when the door is rusting through, several panels are failing, parts are no longer available, or the combined repairs approach the cost of a new door from about $1,400 installed.
Do you cover Marion and the southern suburbs?
Yes. We repair garage doors across metro Adelaide, including Marion, Glenelg, Brighton, Reynella and Morphett Vale in the south, as well as the eastern, western and northern suburbs and outer areas such as Gawler, Mount Barker and Aldinga. Tell us your suburb on the quote form.
